Former School Building
Old School Building
The building, which now houses a holiday apartment, a souvenir shop and the ticket office for the castle ascent, is the oldest structure on the castle grounds and was once used for the care of the poor.
It was built in 1578 by the castle lord Erasmus von Stadl. Needy subjects who were unable to provide for themselves were allowed to live here, free of charge. The care of the poor was financed by pious donations from the lords of the castle.
In the 19th century, the building served as a school for Riegersburg.
On the west side of the building, remains of a Romanesque round-arched frieze (ca. 950 – 1250 AD) are visible. These remains possibly originate from the oldest church building in Riegersburg. A frieze is a typical medieval architectural decoration, usually horizontal and often composed of small arches.
