Annentor (Fortified Gate)

Annentor

The Annentor, the third of the seven gates, was built by the “Gallerin” in the mid-17th century, as a single-storey fortification.

The spacious upper floor, the entrance to which is located after the bend in the path, was originally used to house the guards and later as a hayloft.

The gate, reinforced with iron plates, also dates from the 17th century. The small door on the gate is called a wicket gate. If a rider or cart needed to pass through, the large gate was opened. Individuals could enter through the wicket gate.

The stone slab to the left of the gate was the so-called watchman’s bench or guard’s bench.
