“Stone Cellar Gate” and “Tithe Cellar”
Steinkellertor can be translated as “stone cellar gate”. It is the youngest of the seven gates on the castle grounds. It received its name from the stone cellar situated to the west of the gate. The cellar is carved deep into stone.
According to the inscription on the keystone (the topmost stone of the archway), this gate was built in 1690 CE by Johann Rudolf vom Purgstall, who was the grandson of the “Gallerin”.
A 17th century view in an old illustration shows that the gate was made of wood.
The left-hand passage leads to the stone or tithe cellar. This is where the wine and grain tithe was stored. The “tithe” was the tenth part of the harvest that the subjects had to hand over to the lord of the castle as taxes in kind.
