Sallyport
Sallyports are hidden openings through which one could secretly leave a castle or send a defence group outside in an undetected manner.
This narrow passage between the cliff face and the defence wall was a key point in the fortress that was easy to defend. The castle garrison could quickly sally out here and surprise the attacker.
On the other hand, sallyports were weak points in the defence system, through which a well-prepared enemy could penetrate easily. For this reason, they were usually secured with lockable gates.
In times of peace, sallyports served as shortcuts.
