“Röthel” Cavelet
The human-sized cave and the legends of Riegersburg’s underground tunnels
Hidden behind the inconspicuous entrance to the cavelet is a hollow space around two metres high.
According to old tales, even a rider and his horse found shelter here.
This cavity was not created by human hands; it is a volcanic bubble. The cave gets its name from the reddish sand found inside.
According to a legend, there are numerous underground tunnels extending from the castle hill to the surrounding area. These tunnels are said to lead to the nearby Kornberg Castle and even to the town of Feldbach, 10 km away.
To this day, no trace of the entrances has been found, but who knows?
