Embrasures

These openings in the wall protected the soldiers using long-range weapons.

Soldiers could shoot outwards at a wide angle with crossbows, bows or hooked guns. While firing their weapons, the soldiers were well protected and almost impossible to hit.

Over the course of time, many different types of embrasures were developed, as weapons evolved.

The embrasures here were designed for crossbows and especially for arquebuses (or hook guns).

The vertical slits are rather short and relatively wide. This ensured good weapon handling.

The four-sided outward bevelling not only allowed movement to the left and right, but the weapon could also be aimed upwards for a long-range shot and downwards for a short-range shot.

In the weapons’ museum inside the castle, there are hook guns and much more to marvel at. Selected items can even be tried out.
