View to the South

View to the South

In the 19th century, part of the wall was removed to open up the view of the Styrian volcanic region.

From this spot, you can see several prominent former volcanoes in the region. To the south, you’ll find the Gleichenberger Kogel, which can be explored via beautiful hiking trails. To the left, you can see the Stradnerkogel with the ORF broadcasting facility. Slightly in front of that is the Steinberg, now a basalt quarry, and also the volcanic cone of Kapfenstein, crowned by a charming castle.

From here, you can also get a good view of part of the market town of Riegersburg, including the Church of St. Martin and the local bathing lake.

A bit further to the southeast, at the end of the valley, lies the so-called Schießlkogel, a legendary former witches’ gathering place. In the 17th century, the pastor of Hatzendorf, Gregor Agricola, held a fateful gathering there with others. This event sparked the largest witch trials in the region. You can find more information about this at the Witch Museum in Riegersburg.
