Lichteneggertor (Fortified Gate)

Lichteneggertor

The fourth of the seven gates was built in the mid-17th century under the “Baroness von Galler” and has undergone significant changes over the centuries.

According to an illustration from the 17th century, this gate had two storeys and was connected at the same level to the former Lichtenegg Castle on the left.

A wall separated the two passageways when approaching from below. The passage on the right, as seen from here, leads to the Hochburg. In front of the gate, there was reportedly a moat with a drawbridge.

The gate opening on the left served as access to the former Meierhof. This was the farmstead of the estate manager, also known as the Meier.

The farm was located beneath the outer wall of Lichtenegg Castle and no longer exists.

After the left passage of the gate was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1886, the Liechtenstein family rebuilt it in its present form.
