Viticulture at Riegersburg
A noble drop is matured on historical ground.
The history of viticulture at Riegersburg castle can be traced back to the 16th century. Even at that time, the fertile potential of the rock was recognised. The historical vineyard was located below the present-day tavern, in an area known as the “Katharinenbastei.”
In the 17th century, the legendary Gallerin had the entire area west of the castle hill planted with vines, as wine symbolised power.
The historical viticulture declined at the beginning of the 20th century. By 1928, cereal crops were being grown in the former vineyards. However, in the late 1980s, wine production at Riegersburg was resumed.
Since 2005, the Bernhart winery has taken on the challenging yet rewarding task of cultivating the three-hectare castle vineyards. A unique microclimate is created by the basalt rock, elevated position of the vineyards and protective castle walls. Combined with the highly mineral-rich soil, this results in distinctive aromas that make the wine exceptional. It is therefore fair to say that a very special wine matures here.
