Outer Castle Court

Outer Castle Court

The outer castle court was built in the 17th century by the “Gallerin“.

On the left, you can see massive steps carved from volcanic rock. These lead to the so-called Donkey’s Path (Eselsteig).

A refugee camp probably existed before the construction of the outer castle court, at the upper end of the Donkey’s Path. This camp was established around 1600 by Hans von Stadl. He obtained the material needed for fortification from Radkersburg.

There was an armoury on the ground floor of the outer castle court. Today, you can still see parts of the wooden panelling and the old wall racks where the weapons were stored. The soldiers’ scales stood in the entrance room. They would record their weight on the wall. For example: Angelius Pratter 122 pounds, 1681; or Hyronimus Hiermaier 112 pounds, 1701.

The officers’ quarters were the rooms on the first floor. The defence walkway (battlements) led into these rooms.

A blacksmith’s forge was at the upper end of the defence walkway.

The remains of the wall to the east (behind the forge) were magazines. Behind these wall remains are the remnants of the Gunpowder Tower.
