Inner Moat
This moat was filled with water for the Styrian Regional Exhibition, held in 1987.
According to a description from the 17th century, the second moat is described as a “wet moat“, indicating that it was water-bearing.
However, this could only have been possible after rainfall due to the permeability of the stone.
On the occasion of the successful regional exhibition “Witches and Wizards” in 1987, this moat was sealed with a pond liner and filled with water to fight potential fires. It has served as a fire-fighting pond ever since.
For many years, goldfish and koi have thrived in it.
The last part of the bridge could be raised in case of danger. You can still recognise the openings in the gate with the pulleys (drawbridges were raised and lowered using a rope and pulley system). There is a recess around the entrance, in which the raised part of the bridge sank flush with the wall.
